Back to the Drawing Board

I am so far behind I should start with a 6 month update, but Shane did something blog worthy this morning, so he gets the first post. :) We had a super good rain recently that filled our dirt tank higher than it has been since we've lived here. The next day, Shane and the girls worked for hours constructing a raft with whatever they could find. Shane did a test trip and was able to raft out a little way into the tank. He was so excited. There was talk of taking passengers. The girls were itching to ride it, but we had to wait until today to have a chance.

This morning at daylight, Shane had us all walking out the door to the tank. I noted that the thermometer said 38 degrees. Crisp, but very nice. Shane ran the last little way to the tank and started moving the raft out of the little cove he had it docked in.

Looking good! A little tricky to get balanced on, but he was managing. Can you guess what it coming next? Right about now, I started laughing because I noticed he still had his backpack on. It held dry clothes and towels (he loves packing survival gear).
It went from rightside up to upside down in a hurry! He was so deflated he didn't even comment on the cold water. He was most concerned with getting it back up to try it again. He thought surely it was just a fluke that it tipped over.
He got up again, but before I could snap a picture of him rowing, he was back in the tank. I was saying the Mama thing... "You need to get out and get dry." It was like he didn't hear me. He was muttering " It must have taken on some water in the barrels. It held a lot better the other day. I guess I need to....." :) Meanwhile, the girls were laughing SO hard at the second falling in that they couldn't hardly feel sorry that his design failed him. They were just hooting and reenacting it. I might have been laughing pretty hard too, but he didn't take it personally. :) I did notice they weren't asking him for a ride anymore. :)
He decided to drag it to shore and get back to fixing it this afternoon when school is over.
I turned around and got a kick out of who else wanted to watch the rafting venture.
He turned and walked away like "Way to go, kid. Better luck next time." :) On the trek back to the house, Shane was saying "I will not get discouraged. Samuel Morse didn't!" Then, "But I envisioned gently paddling out to the middle of the tank while you watched and I could have said 'Look at my beautiful raft!" :)  As we got to the house, he said "It is a little hard to not be discouraged. As soon as school is out, I will figure out how to build another one."

Onward and upward!

Ivey had told me Shane had made a raft, so I was waiting for the adventure! Way to go Shane, and I love the immediate plan to better the design. Lop says they need to be on the edge and maybe not in the middle at all! =)
So funny that the backpack took the drink too. Great pics and a super adventure--can't wait for part 2!!

This is the best story I've read in a long while - so great (and funny!).
Shane, your Uncle Justin would say "never say whoa in a bogg hole" --- try er' again!! (And tell your Mom she MUST give a play by play of part 2.....

What a great blog post and even though it didn't quite work like planned ... Way to go Shane!! Love your adventure! :) I kept thinking of this yesterday and laughing to myself through out the day ... for some reason all I could think of was Uncle Paul and Wiley Coyote :) Back to the drawing board...but you'll get it and we'll be anxious for part 2! Thanks for sharing and for the laughs too :)
